Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (Andrews Sisters) [HL]

This Andrews Sister’s Jump Blues hit was a favourite WWII-era number that landed it the ranking of #6 in the ‘Songs Of The Century’ list from the RIAA. The 1941 release, written by Don Raye and Hughie Price was pressed nearly a year before the US entered the war. It tells the tale of a Chicago musician drafted into the US Army who’s groovin’ Revile stylings land him a spot keeping the troops’ toes tapping. It, of course features the Andrews Sisters’ classic harmonized vocals, but works just as well as a solo vocal number!

In The Midnight Hour (Wilson Pickett) [HL]

In The Midnight Hour’ is the calling card of none other than the great Wilson Pickett. Recorded in 1965 and written in collaboration with Stax soul guru Steve Cropper, the tune was Pickett’s first hit on Atlantic Records. A bit of trivia — the song was purportedly written by the duo at the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis — the same hotel where Martin Luther King, Jr would later be assasinated in 1968. This driving soul classic has seen many covers over the years from Martha Reeves to Jackie Wilson and the Commitments, but there is something about the crisp, simple production of the original that can’t be beat.

Turn On Your Love Light (Blues Brothers) [HL]

This 1961 Bobby Bland hit was adopted by those musical merrymakers the Blues Brothers for their second film, Blues Brothers 2000. The song was written by Bland band leader and arranger Joe Scott with credit to Duke Records producer Don Robey. ‘Turn On Your Love Light’ ended up becoming a #2 US hit for Bobby Bland and a standard of R&B repertoire.

Fall At Your Feet (Crowded House) [HL]

Fall At Your Feet’ is a classic Pop/Rock Ballad from Crowded House’s 1991 album ‘Woodface’. The song, written by Neil Finn was the only cut on the album written without the collaboration of Finn’s brother Tim (of ‘Splin Enz’ fame). The song peaked at #17 in the UK and had Top 100 success in the US, Australia and elsewhere around the world.

Hot Hot Hot (Arrow) [HL]

There is one song that people around the world associate with Calypso and Soca — Arrow’s 80’s hit ‘Hot Hot Hot’. Monserrat-born Arrow featured the song on his 1982 studio album of the same name and it instantly became a hit worldwide. The Soca classic has seen numerous covers, from the successful 1987 Buster Poindexter cut to Latin boyband Menudo and even a Hindi rendition from India’s Babla & Kanchan.

White Christmas (Shaun Evans) [HL]

A little jam at the piano led to this Boogie-Woogie take on a Christmas classic from Irving Berlin. Get your dancin’ shoes on for ‘Winter Wonderland’! Brought to you by arranger Shaun Evans.
